Discount Car Insurance Rates

Looking for discount car insurance rates can seem like an impossible task. There are so many different discounts available and it can be hard to tell exactly what you need to do to qualify for each one. Fortunately, though, there are some basic ways to get discounted car insurance rates. While some of these will not apply to you, most people find themselves eligible for at least one or two of these discounts.

Car-Based Discount Car Insurance Rates

One of the most common ways to get discount vehicle insurance rates has to do with different features of your car.  A discount car insurance company wants its drivers to drive safe cars, because that means the company is less likely to have to pay major medical bills in case of an accident.

Because of this, you can often get discount car insurance rates if your vehicle is safer. Newer vehicles are often issued safety ratings by the government, and a car with a high safety rating will sometimes earn you discounted rates. If your car is older or has a lower safety rating, you can sometimes still save money based on safety features installed in the vehicle. Things like dual airbags or anti-lock brakes can significantly lower your insurance rates.

In addition, auto coverage companies like cars that are harder to steal or easier to find if stolen. Again, this is because it saves them money in the long-run. Therefore, you can get discount auto insurance rates for having different anti-theft features on your car. Different car insurance companies give this discount for different things, but in general you should consider features like a LoJack device, a car alarm, or even the consistent use of a Club.

It may actually be in your best interests to install one or more of these features on your vehicle if you don't already have them. Make sure that the amount you save in reduced rates over time will more than total the cost of installing the feature, though, or you will have a net loss even if you gain a discount.

Driver-Based Discount Car Insurance Rates

Another popular way to save money on auto coverage is through discount car insurance rates based on the driver. The most popular of these is the discount a driver earns if he or she has a clean driving record. This means that he has not gotten into any accidents, had any tickets, or had anyone make other claims against his insurance over a certain period of time, usually 3-5 years. Auto coverage companies like safe drivers, because they cost the company less, and so this discount is often one of the most significant that they offer.

In addition, drivers can sometimes get discount car insurance rates if they take some sort of drivers education course. This rate reduction varies widely among states and coverage companies. Some companies only offer this rate reduction to new drivers, young drivers, and/or elderly drivers. On the other hand, the reduction is usually significant enough that it's worth looking into. Note, though, that the course you can take usually cost money. If you won't save enough, it may not be worth the investment.

Drivers can also get discount automobile insurance rates based on the nature of their relationship with the coverage company itself. There are several ways to get your premiums reduced this way. Sometimes, if you have more than one type of policy with the same company, they will reduce what you pay for each of them. This means having homeowner's, renter's, medical, or life coverage with the same company that covers your car. Note that this isn't a good deal unless you were going to purchase each type of coverage anyway.

You can also get a rate reduction if you have more than one vehicle or driver on the same coverage policy. Similarly, many companies will give you lower premiums if you pay in full at the start of the coverage period instead of paying on a monthly basis. Both of these rate reductions are small, but can add up. Many companies will also give you lower premiums if you continue to purchase with them and don't switch to another company.

If you think you qualify for any of the discounts discussed above, talk to your car insurance company about getting reduced rates. Note that different companies sometimes have different things you have to do to qualify for each discount, so you may get lower rates with one company but not with another. If you think you should be getting a discount that you don't see reflected in your contract, make sure you ask about it. Most companies will do their best to give you everything you qualify for in terms of discount car insurance rates, but it's easy for things to slip through the cracks.
