Discount Car Insurance
Discount car insurance is easy to find, especially when you know where to look. The whole concept of purchasing car insurance seems overwhelming to many people, and that's without trying to get a good deal or finding discounts that apply to you. Fortunately, though, discount auto insurance is pretty straightforward, once you understand some basic concepts.
Driver-Based Discount Car Insurance
Discount vehicle insurance comes from rate reductions such as a car insurance no claims discount that have the potential to save you the most money are based on driving record. If you do not have accidents, tickets or citations, or previous claims on your record, most car insurance companies will give you discounts. Some companies even give more discounts the longer you keep your record clear.
If your record isn't clear, talk to your auto insurance company about these discounts anyway. Many only ask you to have a clear record for a few years to earn at least the lowest level of rate reduction. If you don't qualify, make sure you find out when you will and remember to contact the company again at that time, to ensure you get the low premiums you qualify for.
You can also get discount auto insurance in many states for participating in some sort of driver's education or defensive driving course. Check with your particular company, though, because you may only get discounts if you are a new driver, a teen driver, or over a certain age. Since the courses cost money, it may not be worthwhile to attend if you won't qualify for a discount.
Sometimes, you can get discount car insurance based on any groups or associations that you belong to. Professional associations, alumni groups, and even city groups like a chamber of commerce will sometimes work out deals for their members with certain car insurance companies. Contact the group directly for more information, as they'll have the best knowledge about which companies they're working with.
Students are often eligible for reduced rates based on their grade point average. Kids who are responsible in school have been proven to be responsible behind the wheel, too, so companies offer them a discount for keeping their grades high. Check with your particular company to find their threshold if your student has had good grades for quite a while.
If you don't drive your car very much, you may be able to get reduced rates for that, too, and may be eligible for similar discounts if you don't drive during high-traffic times of day, like common commuting hours. Living rurally will sometimes get you discounts, too, because you're less likely to have large numbers of other vehicles on the road with you.
Having your coverage policy with the same company for a long period of time can net you a discount, as can having multiple cars and drivers on your policy or multiple policies with the same company. It can be worthwhile to look into getting any life, health, homeowner's, or renter's policies from the same company where you get your auto coverage, because you may get discounted rates on both. See if you get rate reductions for paying in full, too, instead of making a payment on your policy each month.
Finally, some companies offer discounts based on your profession. If you work a desk job and don't do something dangerous for a living, you're more likely to be car accident free, and so may be able to pay less for your coverage. Not all companies offer this discount, so you'll want to make sure yours does before you count on it.
Vehicle-Based Discount Car Insurance
You can also get discount car insurance based on your vehicle. Driving a safe car means that the coverage company is less likely to have to pay medical expenses in case of an accident, so they will often give discounts for certain safety features you have installed. The particular discounted features differ from company to company, but usually include things like anti-lock brakes and dual airbags.
In addition, you are often eligible for a discount on your car coverage if your have anti-theft features installed on your vehicle. Car alarms, a LoJack device, and even regular use of a club can qualify you for these discounts.
If you're ever unsure whether you can get a particular discount car insurance to apply to you or not, make sure you contact your car insurance company directly. They should be able to look at your policy and show you where the discounts are included or explain why they are not. In fact, if you ever have any questions about your discount automobile insurance, be sure to talk to them. Helping you is, after all, what they're there for.
